Every price on this page is an estimate. We work it out from the road distance between pickup and delivery and show it as a range, so treat the figures below as a guide rather than a final quote. Distance is the biggest driver, but price does not rise in a straight line. The Los Angeles trip is roughly four times as far as the Indianapolis one, yet it costs only about two and a third times as much.

New Jersey is small and sits in the middle of the Northeast corridor, so many moves are short, such as a hop to New York, Philadelphia or Connecticut. Very short runs still need a driver, truck space and paperwork, so we price them case by case, and a quote confirms the exact figure. Most of the routes on this page are longer hauls where carriers have a full load, which is where the estimates are most reliable.

Other Midwest runs fall in the same band. Indianapolis to Jersey City (706 miles) is estimated at $514–$734, Evansville to Edison (849 miles) at $606–$866 and Chicago to Newark (782 miles) at $569–$813.

Direction matters very little. The same pair of cities is usually priced within a dollar or two both ways: Newark to Orlando is $730–$1,043 and Orlando to Newark is $731–$1,044, while Newark to Atlanta is $612–$874 and Atlanta to Newark is $611–$873. A one-way move costs about the same whether New Jersey is where the car starts or where it ends up.

What else moves the figure inside the range:

• Where in New Jersey the car sits. Pickups near the New Jersey Turnpike, Interstate 78, Interstate 80 and the Garden State Parkway are easy for a driver to reach, because major East Coast truck routes pass through them. A car at the end of a narrow residential block, or in a town well off the main roads, may need a short detour or a nearby meeting point, which can push the price toward the top of the range.
• Vehicle size and condition. Pickup trucks, large SUVs and cars that do not run take more room or special equipment than a sedan.
• Open or enclosed. Enclosed trailers cost more than open ones. Our route estimates show a single range, so ask for the enclosed price separately.
• The calendar. Florida lanes are busiest in the fall and again in the spring, and a storm along the coast can reshuffle carrier schedules, so a flexible pickup date helps you find a driver who is already heading your way.

Think of the schedule as two separate clocks. The first is the pickup window: a carrier is normally assigned and reaches you 1–3 business days after booking. The second is transit, which depends on how far the car is going. On our New Jersey routes it is 1–2 days for trips up to about 700 miles, 2–3 days from 700 to about 1,100 miles, 2–4 days from about 1,100 to 1,400 miles, 3–5 days from 1,400 to about 1,700 miles, 4–7 days around 1,700 to 1,800 miles, 5–8 days from 1,800 to about 2,500 miles and 7–9 days from 2,500 to about 2,900 miles.

Because most New Jersey moves are short or medium, the wait for a truck can matter as much as the drive itself. A shipment from Newark to Boston or Philadelphia is a matter of hours on the road, but it still has to fit onto a carrier that is already loading nearby. Cross-country shipments are the opposite: the pickup window is a small slice of the total, and transit decides when the car arrives.

New Jersey adds a few local factors. Heavy traffic on the Turnpike, on Interstates 78 and 95 and at the Hudson River crossings, including the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels and the George Washington Bridge, can slow a loaded carrier, especially at rush hour and on summer weekends heading to the shore. The Garden State Parkway and Route 9 serve the Monmouth and Ocean County coast, where beach traffic builds up on warm weekends. In winter, snow, ice and nor’easters can close roads or hold up a driver for a day or more, and a truck coming from the Midwest or the South may reach New Jersey later than first planned.
